I had the pleasure of knowing Ty for a few years, as he attended many of our Prospect Wire events with his brother Tucker and his father Ken. Because of Ken's baseball background, he helped with our events and I had the opportunity to get to know Ty a little more then the average participant in our showcases and tournaments. He was extremely bright, mature beyond his years, and very comfortable speaking with people older then him like myself. I can tell you about the time when my brother-in-law Kenny White (head coach at Hillsborough HS) needed help with his winter ball team and I called pitches for him. And when Kenny's Hillsborough team faced Ty's Wharton team I was excited to get an updated evaluation of Ty for our website. When Ty came up to hit at Wharton and he stayed back and took a 2-0 changeup off the wall, I knew he was a special hitter. But my lasting memory of Ty wasn't his baseball ability - but his ability to use baseball to help others. My lasting memory was in 2010 when I drove up to Gainesville, FL to help my friend Steve Barton evaluate his travel team tryouts for Gatorball - Tuck was trying out for them, Ty was just watching already on FTB Mizuno's team. I glanced over during the tryouts in the batting cages and Ty was helping a younger player with his swing off the tee. Most kids in Ty's position would "big-league" others - watching the younger kids tryout while acting like a bigshot. But Ty spent his time there to help a kid from Gainesville with his swing that he had never met before. Just another life positively touched by Ty. Was Ty a bad driver? Probably. But Ty was a great kid, a great young man, and a great ballplayer. He will be missed.
