Coaching Ty when he was 9 or 10

I was a baseball coach for Ty many years ago in Minnesota. When you coach a player you develop a unique bond that lasts for many years and it saddened me deeply to hear about his passing.
He was a wonderful, young man and I will remember him fondly.
I coached Ty at the 9/10 yr old level. At this age group, coaches could stand in the field during the games, with the players to help them understand where to throw the ball when it was fielded. Also that this age the game can be very slow. The control of pitchers is not the best. One time Ty was playing Left center and after a particular long time waiting for a pitch to hit, there was a player that finally hit a ball, it was a rocket and it was headed straight for Ty. He did not move a muscle and if he would have been 3" to the right it would have hit him right between the eyes. There was the normal chaos of 9/10 year olds running after the ball but Ty never moved an inch. He just stood there looking at home base. After the ball was fielded, I walked over to Ty and as I approached him the look of "what just happened" came to his face. I smiled and asked him if he had a good day dream. He looked me right in the eyes and said "coach it was great, do you think we will be able to get Dairy Queen after the game?".
I have told this story many times over the years and in that one moment Ty helped to teach me that the game is just a game to kids. No ultra competitive desires, no concerns about politics, no worry about anything but having fun.
At the young age of 9/10 Ty helped to teach me a lesson I have remembered for the last 10 years of coaching at very competitive levels. It is a game, it is just a game for kids, played by kids.
Ty you made a difference in my life and I will miss you.
